This Certificate in Autism Studies (CAS) is a 10-week course, conducted online, face-to-face live-streaming via zoom platform. The course begins with an introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Types and characteristics of ASD, Identification and Assessment, Teaching & Learning Strategies and Transition. Lecture notes, reading materials and teaching videos will be included.
The course is designed to empower participants with the knowledge and skills required to support learning for individuals with ASD and additional needs in and beyond a classroom environment. This course will examine the psychological, physiological, social, and educational characteristics of individuals who have been identified as having ASD.

This module will provide participants with basic understanding in the area of autism spectrum disorders. The module will cover among others topics; concept and definition of ASD, causes, prevalence and incidence, recent trends and updates of ASD globally, the ASD triads, historical perspective of ASD, and finally theoretical perspective: theory of mind, central coherence theory, executive dysfunction theory.
This module studies the characteristics and the five types of ASD. Participants will cover Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorders and Pervasive Developmental Disorders-not Otherwise Specified
In this module participants will learn about screening, diagnosis and assessments for ASD.They will gain understanding on screening tools such CHAT; MCHAT; Infant-Toddler Checklist; Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire and DSM-IV. In addition, participants will have an overview of assessment such as psychological, developmental, educational, functional, functional analysis, and behavioral.
This module covers a wide range of effective teaching & learning strategies in teaching children with autism spectrum disorders. participants will learn about structured physical environment and classroom organization, task analysis & reinforcement, joint action routines, visual strategies, therapies, sensory integration, and diet.
This module highlights transition services for persons with ASD. Topics to be covered include Transition from one level to another level (age 0 – 21), home to school, adolescence to adulthood, school to work (employment), school to community. It looks at life skill education, independent living, relationships, budgeting, transportation, and civic rights. Finally, participants will learn about Vocational training and Individual Transition Plan for persons with ASD.
